Exclusive: Interview with Jojo    

Introduce yourself.

Hello everybody. My name is Johannes Jacobi but everybody just calls me Jojo.

I´m 23 years old and I live in Germany / Ignition Valley.

How did it happen, that you came into aggressive inline? How many years have you been skating already?

I’m skating 14 years already. I got some kids skates with plastic wheels and than I just started to jump around with it. After a couple of years I became a part of the local show team and traveled around Germany for some halfpipe shows. Because of the traveling and all the experiences I became more addicted than expected… and here I am J

Are you interested in any other extreme sports, except ours?

I’m reading most of the skateboard, bmx and sbowboard magazines because I’m really interested in their culture as well. I think there’s a lot we can learn from them.

But I’m not doing anything else besides rolling and working for rolling.

Are there any results that you are proud of? Name, please, some of them.

Hm… I competed in a lot of competitions in the last years. But I don’t know which stuck out the most. I’m German Champion for two years in a row right now, but since there are less and less Pro skaters in Germany I’m nor sure how proud I can be of that J, Usually I just try to have the best time while I’m traveling to other events!

If there’s anything I’m proud of, than the big Be-Mag interview I had in one of the last issues. And I’m also proud of what the Winterclash became over the years - since I worked really really hard to make it grow!

As far as I know, you have your own pro-model of Kizer? What was your part in inventing exactly this model?

When they told me that there will be a Jojo Jacobi frame it was clear that it needs to be a fluid, since fluid frames are the best and I don’t skate anything else! The guy who designed the frame is working at the Conference, but he’s also one of the guys I started skating with. So we just played around with different designs and in the end I just thought it would be the best to put my name on it and some snowflakes… I don’t like over designed stuff.

How does your setup looks like now?

The new black VALO TV.2, Jojo Jacobi Kizer Frames and Jojo Jacobi Chimera Wheels.

Try to remember, if there was a trick in your life, that you are proud of? I mean, you couldn’t even imagine, that you would ever do it, or it was an outstanding place, or smth else.

Hm.. Hard question. I mean, I’m skating a bit different than most of the skaters. I’m not really into grinding and often I just enjoy cruising and jumping around. So it’s not about being proud doing the next 540 kindgrind. But the disaster Topsoul is definitely something I was proud of when I did it! And one thing that will probably stick in my mind forever was the drop in from a bridge when I was shooting with Alex Schneider the first time ever. The picture was on be-mag.com I think.

If you had a chance to make a “trick of your dream”, how would it look like and where would you like to do it?

I think there’s not really a “trick of my dreams”. But if I could choose the “session of my dreams” at a perfect place it would be a bowl / park session with Dominik Wagner and some other friends at the Roskilde Festival for one week.

Do you have favorite park in any town in a world? Why?

The Ignition Valley Skatepark is one of the best parks. It’s small, but it got the best flow and everything is built for Rollerbladers. That’s perfect for sure!

The best video, in your opinion?

The first Mindgames videos and Better Than baseball -  because it shows the fun in rolling.

How did an idea about Winterclash step into your mind? Who helped you, how was everything made?

I was always organizing small rolling competitions in my old hometown and at some point I just wanted to create something bigger. So the idea came up and I started everything by my own. It grew double size every year and now it’s the biggest event in Rollerblading -  which is a bit weird and unreal for me, hehe.

The person who helped me the most is definitely Bassti Beheim (Hey Dude VM). He helped with everything. But for sure there are a lot of great people who help us building the new ramps and so on.

All in all I think the reason why the Winterclash is such an success, is that I try to keep it on a very personal level. It’s not about big money and big sponsors, but more about all the skaters coming together and having the best time veer!

In what year was it the best? Why?

I think the third Winterclash was my personal best event. Just because everything was under control and I felt really really safe while running the event!

This year it became a bit too big and I sometimes felt like I can’t control it anymore. So some changes for next year are definitely needed!

What do you know about Russia? J

Stefan Horngacher told me a lot about it and it made me really curious to see it by my own!!!

But the thing which comes up first to my mind is the sick skating. I think it was 4 years ago (or more) when I saw the first edits from these Iguana real street contests. And it was unbelievable incredible what went down there. The biggest stunts and huge crowds. I didn’t know this was possible in Rollerblading!

And about Russian rollerbladers? Do you know any names?

As I wrote before.. they are sick! The one I like the most is for sure Andrey Zayzev. But it seems like he’s not skating anymore?

But yeah, the two names who made Russian Rollerblading famous in the whole world are Andrey Zayzev and Evgeniy Leonoff. They popped out of nowhere on a higher level than everybody!

Do you know, that some of them are going to take part in Winterclash this year?

Seriously? I try to get some of you over to Winterclash since a few years now. 2 years ago i think some where supposed to come, but nobody showed up. So tell me, who is coming?

I’ll tell you immediately, when we choose. Would you like to visit Russia one day, and to skate here?

Ey… if there’s one place I wanna see and skate for sure in my life, its Russia! So I will try my best to come over as soon as possible. I just need enough money… but hey, maybe I can help out at a big event in the future and come over for that.. who knows…..
